Not so Salty, America!
So I finally had my turn at the Popeye’s chicken sandwich that everyone was raving about a couple of years now. Yes, it’s been two years, just about — I am usually about this late to all trends but please do not count me out! While I am a foodie being a foodie did not catapult me out to the sidewalk and long lines for a terse chicken sandwich, and gladly so. I believe that my opinion does matter on a food trend as popular as this, albeit how late I got to it.
My first thought with this sandwich was, “Nothing fresh?” As I glared woefully at the pretty bun and chicken that were no doubt cooked to match in tone for that picture-perfect view. As I said, the sandwich was terse, it barely said much. Though tasty, my mind also said, “Not too much salt,” as I took a break for other food to get away from the veritable additive.
It’s sad that something so terribly popular can be over-spiced in this way, and I was somewhat embarrassed that salt continues to be overused despite longstanding medical advice to reduce its intake. It’s also sad and disappointing that such a unifying experience could be so marred by such carelessness to our health needs, especially that of the African-American community. As a country of wildly talented and educated individuals, it is only neglect that can be responsible for such a collective disaster, and its one aid like to see no more.
The pickles were a sad inclusion, as it shows an utter rejection for health principles as we know it. My thought is, if you take time to put pickles, then you could have taken time to add lettuce and tomato. And even onions.
But you just wanted to salty America, Popeye’s. When I say, “not so salty America,” I am not talking only about our food intake but our attitude too. Don’t be neglectful, America. My belief is that sodium intake and diet in general, can propel rash or destructive behaviors and I strongly alert readers to examine your diet and your life as a whole to ensure that you are in compliance with your doctor’s recommendations. Don’t not do the things you know you’re supposed to do. In other words, follow the rules. If Covid-19 taught us anything, it should be that simple solutions save lives and time spent squabbling on “which way,” is demeaning and exhausting. So from the desk of someone in charge of 2021, no more screw-ups. Many returns. And many more modest chicken sandwiches!
